Where once I lived (1)

Prahran is a suburb of Melbourne, Vic, Australia. Near the corner High Street - Chapel Street there's Eastbourne Street, with Ann Street running off it. Some Melbourne taxi drivers insist that Ann Street is in Windsor and indeed, it's borderline... but most votes go to Prahran. In the second half of the sixties I lived for a while in 9/7 Ann Street, that is flat 9 of number 7. Main inhabitants of the place were two Dutch girls in their early twenties, Bertie Sinnema and Ankie van der Goot. I don't remember where Bertie worked, but Ankie worked in Bourke Street, in Myers. Myers had a department then called "Miss Melbourne Shop", and Ankie sold ladies fashion stuff there. I didn't work during my time in Ann Street, on account of some regular cheques coming in from my home country Holland. Opposite our flat was Karin Quitt's. Karen was a beautiful Austrian girl in her late twenties. She had a neutered tomcat, Sydney. When Karin went to work in the morning she let Sydney out, and good old Syd immediately started scratching our front door. I always let him in and went back to bed for half an hour or so, followed by Sydney who made himself comfortable against my legs or feet. Nor far from our flat was the Prahran police station, which I soon got to know both outside and inside. Oh, well... the cops brewed a pretty good cuppa, which helped revive me next morning in the drunk tank. Then to court (next door), plead "guilty", and out again. To the pub. |
