The humble fingernail clipper
By Jaap Verduijn
In the long history of benign gadgets, the humble fingernail clipper has been (and still is!) severely underestimated. Of course that's not totally without reason: little pieces of personal care equipment, like the ancient tooth brush, the lowly comb and indeed the insignificant clipper, are rarely mentioned in polite company. This sad state of affairs says, however, more about our own view on what's proper or not, than about the above mentioned tools themselves. Why, may one ask, is it perfectly alright to speak in company about the right way to polish ones shoes, but not about the correct method of clipping ones fingernails or, even worse, ones toenails? What makes nails less decent than shoes? Or rather: are nails less decent than shoes? I'd say: "No! Absolutely no!" Nails are in no way less decent than shoes, boots, flipflops or sandals - on the contrary! Our nails have been given to us when we were born, they are part of ourselves, of our own bodies, of our own being! But shoes? One has to buy them or, even more mundane, have them handed down from an elder brother or sister who has outgrown them. No, there really is no reason to value nails less than shoes. Serious: if God had meant us to wear shoes, He would have created them. But did He? Well, did He? No sirreebob, He didn't. He created us with nails. Toenails and fingernails. Ten of each. And since we have nails, they need to be clipped. Of course one can do that with a pair of scissors, but I would kind of advise against it. Too easy to become over-enthousiastic, and take away part of the finger along with the nail. We can't have that, can we, because after only ten such mishaps we run out of fingernails. Another ten, and we don't have toenails left either. Naaah... that's no good. The nailclipper then. An easy to handle, simple gadget that makes maintaining the correct nail length much simpler, and much safer. Why, even a child can clip its own nails! So let's be honest, and give the humble fingernail clipper the praise that it so clearly deserves. Many of us owe the continuing use of all their fingers to the little thingummy, and if that isn't worthy of praise... well... I wouldn't know what is!
