Oturupon-Oyeku

Ifa divination texts from Jaap Verduijn's Odu Ifa Corpus. Ifa as a divination method is found in many countries in West Africa. However, the Yoruba peoples of (mainly) Nigeria have perfected it.

The presented texts are translations, rewritings and interpretations of original Yoruba divination verses, in which the traditional "poetry-like" cadence and rhythm has been preserved and/or recreated as far as the English language allows. The visual structure of the texts in writing is according to tradition - there is no such thing as a line break or a paragraph in Ifa chanting.

The texts are part of the Ifa "working corpus" collected by Jaap Verduijn as an Ifa diviner. More about Ifa on http://www.qondio.com/mama.pl?a=intelshow&i=17751

"Okebeebee, the awo for World,
cast for the ayo game and
for the children.
They told them that they always
should play the ayo game.
Playing with children,
one can share in their joy."
This was cast for a rich man,
who was very unhappy.
The offering is:
a calabash of mashed yams,
a pot of soup, several kinds of food,
two thousand cowries,
and ayo seeds with their game board.
Invite people in your home
to play the ayo game with you,
in order to make
sorrow disappear,
and to avoid death.

"A messy hill, friend of the deck of cards"
cast for Deck of Cards, on the day
that a Rich Man wanted to play
with children. Ifa says
that we should only imitate children
out of joy, and that Rich Man
was sad instead.
Ifa told Deck of Cards to offer
in order to receive joy.
Let people come and eat with you,
and play a game of cards, to make
your sorrows and worries disappear.
The offering is one calabash of mashed yams,
a plate of soup, many kinds of food,
2000 cowries, and a deck of cards.

This intel reflects only one of my activities. I also write about and/or have websites on: the Avro Lancaster bomber, hookah pipes and shisha smoking, bathroom accessories including toilet bowls and bidets, Black Americana and African-American memorabilia, cranberry glass like Fenton vases, mobility scooters and wheelchairs, gold scrap and scrap gold, and much more. Where do I find the time (wide grin)?! Be well! Jaap Verduijn.
