Avro Lancaster bomber
Sometime halfway the 1950's, on a misty morning, a British passenger aircraft approached Frankfurt a.M Airport in West Germany. Navigational systems weren't as good then as they are nowadays, so the aircrafts captain called Frankfurt Tower and asked for directions to the airport. An irritated voice came back: "Scheisse! Have you never been to Frankfurt before?!" Without hesitating one second, the captain shot back: "Sure, twice. But that was at night, and we didn't land". Younger readers may miss the point, but the more senior crowd will immediately understand, and smile. Unless they're German, possibly... During the Second World War thousands of British bombers paid nightly visits to German cities where, indeed, they did not need to land: just drop the bombs and get the heck out! The deservedly most famous of these British bombers was the heavy four-engined Avro Lancaster, a masterpiece of engineering and a true pleasure to fly - even while being shot at. It's designer was Roy Chadwick, sort of the "Main Brainiac" at Avro's. Although many designs from his hand made aviation history, he will forever be remembered for his greatest creation: the Avro Lancaster bomber. That post-war British captain from the beginning of this short tale, certainly owed his life to Chadwicks genius, and the sturdy construction of his masterpiece, the Avro Lancaster. |
